It makes the entire Fallout 4 experience less dreary and empty-seeming, with vegetation overtaking the Boston area long after the radiation has subsided 200+ years after the bombs first dropped. The color scheme is probably the most frequently sited visual problem with the modern Fallout games, and mods like this handily take care of that concern. Ive added my latest personal save. In this save the main quest has not been completed and instead I have stopped short of beginning the quest mass fusion so that all factions are currently friendly and available to choose. However I have finished the 4 story DLC's, automatron, far harbor, Vault-tec workshop and Nuka-world. Fallout 4 was designed to only keep 1 or 2 factions alive, depending on your current affiliations with other factions if you plan to end it with The Minutemen; to be fair, you could leave The Railroad, and Brotherhood of Steel alive if you go with The Minutemen, true, however there's a catch.

Fallout 4’s post-apocalyptic Wasteland is far too vast a place to explore on your own.

Fallout 4 has a dedicated survival mode. But if you want it to extend to more than fast travel, healing, and sleeping, you are out of luck. Luckily, Fallout 4 is insanely moddable and you can change it up to be a totally different experience. So we bring you a collection of mods that will make your Fallout 76 wait just a bit easier. Best faction for survival mode? In survival, i have no morals. I'll kill random innocents to get their gear, betray comrades, and other heinous acts if it means i survive. That being said, when it finally forces me to choose one faction, who do i pick?

Loneliness creeps in slowly as the silence becomes deafening, and the banging of a far-away raider’s rifle is as much a warning of danger as it is a respite from the maddening isolation.

The vanilla game offers plenty of options to keep you company during your travels.

One option is to take Dogmeat along, hoping it’ll warn you of incoming threats and become a food supply were things to get hairy.

Another possibility is to recruit synths, humans and even a super mutant you can talk to while roaming the Commonwealth.

But after so many years of playing the same game, talking to the same people and traveling with the same nutjobs that seemed so interesting in the past… everything starts becoming faded and the ranting of irradiated minds goes from hilariously bizarre to boring and dull.

To improve your experience making friends and influencing people in the Commonwealth, I’ve gathered a list of my favorite companion-related mods available for Fallout 4, making sure there’s something for players on every platform.

12. Companion Infinite Ammo

Available For: PS4/PC

Conserving ammunition is an art.

A discipline requiring good aim and control of your emotions.

You don’t empty a whole mag into a deathclaw’s foot because you’re scared of it, do you?

The thing is, companions rarely have the luxury of a thinking mind that’ll correctly assess the situation. So what do they do?

They spray and pray, every time.

With this mod by Olofstrom, this liability can become an asset as your companions make lead rain upon your enemies without spending a single bullet.

11. Everyone’s Best Friend

Available For: PC/XBOX ONE

There’s plenty of evidence in Fallout 4 suggesting that, originally, Dogmeat was meant to accompany you all the time.

This meant not counting as a companion and therefore leaving the spot open for someone else.

Dogmeat does very little damage, companion perks don’t apply to it, and you can even have the Lone Wanderer perks active while traveling together! There was clearly a last-minute change.

This mod by creator Valdacil simply rights that wrong, letting you keep your canine friend with you without sacrificing the aid of someone who can operate a gun and, well, talk.

10. Visible Companion Affinity

Available For: PC/XBOX ONE

I’ve never been a fan of how many games with companion approval rating systems give you no way of checking your progress at all.

Now thanks to this mod by Cdante, that should no longer be an issue in Fallout 4.

Not only will you get some extra information each time something affects affinity, such as your current standing, but you’ll be able to check it at any time through an item in your inventory.

Simple, clever, and seamless.

9. MAID – Motorized Artificial Intelligent Doll

Available For: PC

Despite this list being aimed at finding great companion mods that are multiplatform, there are a couple that are too cool to leave out despite being only on PC.

The Motorized Artificial Intelligent Doll is one such item.

New Faction Mods Fallout 4

It replaces the Assaultron with a dangerously “kawaii” and very customizable anime-inspired robot, complete with THICC legs and adjustable breast size.

Although at first glance seems un-immersive, I wouldn’t put it past some Institute tinkerer to make this in their private time.

8. Dogmetal (Dog Robot Companions)

Available For: PC/XBOX ONE

One of my favorite parts about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was the fact that Raiden had a badass robot dog to help him tear his enemies to shreds.

And thanks to modder Darklynxxx, your Sole Survivor can have their very own robot mutt – a Dogbot, replacing the game’s classic Dogmeat.

It has unique armors, a much higher defense, and the strength to rip your enemies apart.

If you’d rather keep the lovely German Shepherd around then you can also add up to three automatron dogbot companions instead of replacing it.

7. Companion Appearance Overhaul

Available For: PS4/PC/XBOX ONE

Speaking of spicing up your companions, consider the Companion Appearance Overhaul by Elianora, which promises to make Piper, Curie and some others much more appealing.

This mod is special because, unlike most of what you’ll find in the Nexus or elsewhere, it’s actually available for the PS4 version of the game.

Which isn’t true for every mod due to some coding challenges for the console.

That said, the PC and Xbox One version also swap the companion’s armors for better-looking ones that work with the CBBE body type – which the PS4 has no access to.

6. Companions Go Home

Available For: PC

Another mod that’s only on PC but too good to leave out is Companions Go Home, which lets your followers go back to their daily lives when not adventuring with you.

Few things are as immersion-breaking as watching Piper farm turnips in Sanctuary while complaining that she’s worried sick about her loved ones back home.

5. Heather Casdin

Available For: PC/XBOX ONE

If you’ve been modding Bethesda games for a while, you may be familiar with LlamaRCA. Or at least their famous companion mod for Fallout NV – Willow.

This amazing creator is back in the scene, offering their take on what an immersive companion in Fallout 4 should be like.

She’s romanceable, has custom quests related to her, and she’s fully-voiced by none other than PotasticPanda, known as the voice for the Recorder companion in Skyrim & girlfriend to a legend in the modding community – MxR.

In the 2014 book Designers & Dragons: The '80s, game historian Shannon Appelcline noted that Steve Jackson Games decided in the early 1990s to stop publishing adventures, and as a result 'SJG was now putting out standalone GURPS books rather than the more complex tiered book lines. This included more historical subgenre books. Some, such as GURPS Camelot (1991) and GURPS China (1991), were clearly sub-subgenres, while others like GURPS Old West (1991) and GURPS Middle Ages I (1992) covered genres notably missing before this point.'^[3]^:45

GURPS Voodoo: The Shadow War is one such standalone book, a 128-page softcover book by C.J. Carella, with interior art by Shea Ryan, and cover art by Tim Bradstreet, published by SJG in 1995.

Reception[edit]

In the October 1995 edition of Dragon (Issue #222), Rick Swan noted that this book followed in the footsteps of other supernatural role-playing games like Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse, but said, 'For a zombie-come-lately, however, GURPS Voodoo has a lot going for it, due mostly to the smarts of designer C.J. Carella. Not only does Carella know GURPS like Bill Gates knows computer code [...] he has a knack for blending diverse source material into a seamless whole. It’s hard to tell where fact ends and fantasy begins, which adds to Voodoo’s unsettling tone.' Swan did think that the lengthy history of voodoo might turn off some players, 'But scholarly players should be impressed.' However, Swan felt that the book's diverse subject matter and large geographical reach spread the material too thin, saying, 'GURPS Voodoo needs less sprawl and more focus. I wish Carella would’ve confined the game to a small, self-contained area, like Haiti. It would’ve been easier to manage, and a lot more frightening; imagine being trapped on a tiny island teeming with spirits, clawing through steaming jungles while snarling zombies staggered from the brush. A claustrophobic setting such as this would’ve really turned up the tension.' Nonetheless, Swan concluded by giving this book an excellent rating of 5 out of 6, saying, 'The rich characters, eerie atmosphere, and slow-burn spiritualism add up to a riveting experience.'^[4]

Brainstorming is a creative process of gathering insights without the pressure of contributing ‘sensible’ ideas. It helps hasten the thought process by allowing the free flow of ideas from the participants regardless of how meaningful, wild, or weird the ideas might seem. It aims to find an out-of-the-box solution or idea through an unfiltered array of options.

This is a highly-interactive process that can get out of control; especially if the person facilitating the session is not experienced or skilled enough to control it. The same is true if the participants are also new to the process. In order to achieve its goals, it is important to have a structured brainstorming session and this can be done by using special techniques and templates.

Brainstorming templates help to provide flow and structure to a brainstorming session. In addition to that, some of the benefits of using a brainstorming template are:

It helps kick-start the brainstorming process. A template will guide the facilitator and the group to begin the session. It helps the facilitator to prepare the participants and get them warmed up for a successful thinking process. The same is true for the participants as the visual aid will help them get their thoughts flowing.
It also helps to provide consistency throughout the brainstorming process. Certainly, this activity will not only be done only once within a company or during a project. There will be multiple situations or occasions where a team will need to get together for a brainstorming session. By using a template, participants or team members can anticipate what’s going to happen and will come prepared and ready for the ‘storm’ ahead.
Although brainstorming is structured, most templates offer some flexibility. They can be customized to the preferences or requirements of the team, or depending on the topic or issue to be discussed. It can also be updated based on what is needed at that moment, or if the company or the team has adopted a different brainstorming approach.
By having a visual representation of what they need to accomplish by the end of the session, the group will have an idea of how much time should be spent on each item and be able to manage their time wisely. Brainstorming sessions can really be long, especially if the participants get too excited, and having a tool to remind them of what they still have to do is a big help to get things done faster.
It lets the group focus on what is really important. Groups may be side-tracked, at any point, during the session. Using a template will help the brainstorming group to get back on track.

Brainstorming is a helpful way of creatively coming up with ideas related to a topic or a solution to a problem at hand. However, this creative process can get out of control if there is no structure or direction to the discussion. There are also times when the brainstorming process is not just working, and the team is facing a blank wall.

Brainstorming worksheets are often helpful in these cases. They provide a visual way of brainstorming. Worksheets help to create a mental image of what you want to come up; especially if things are not going smoothly. They also provide a step-by-step guide on how a person or a group should go about the activity.

I'd say Blink makes Slow Fall irrelevant because Blink is so much better. But then Slow Fall has the utility of being applicable to other players. Charges are a last resort for those with no other way of preventing fall damage - which is basically only Druids with Wild Charge, and Rogues with Shadowstep. Anyone can have a fall, but older people are more vulnerable and likely to fall, especially if they have a long-term health condition. Falls are a common, but often overlooked, cause of injury. Around 1 in 3 adults over 65 who live at home will have at least one fall a year, and about half of these will have more frequent falls. The Death Knight is a type of lesser demon in DmC: Devil May Cry Death Knights and their variants carry shields around their left arm and wield blades with their right. 1 Description 1.1 Death Knight 1.2 HellKnight 1.3 Frost Knight Like the Stygian, the Death Knight possesses a razor blade instead of an arm, but also employs a shield to protect itself. Heavy plate armor, and honorbound, with greatsword and unholy magic in hand. A death knight is a fearsome enemy and makes for a loyal teammate. A deal struck with one is sure to be completed without fear of being double-crossed.

Creating a Death Knight[edit]

It is not uncommon for a race to become a Revenant [1] while in service as a Death Knight

Group Dynamics: A death knight's word is paramount, once a deal is struck it cannot be broken. Death Knights are almost always Lawful, most are Lawful Neutral and follow a strict code of honor. The more commonly seen death knights have been Lawful Evil, summoning the dead and being generally evil. Lawful Evil death knights become quick targets for adventuring paladins, leading to a deep mistrust between paladins and even the Lawful Neutral death knights. Very few Death Knights have been Lawful Good and are extremely rare. Overall, they can get along with most knights, Monks and sometimes paladins; and they have respect for the fighting prowess of fighter's and barbarians. They are wary of rogues and bards however, as they are deceitful and untrustworthy.

It is easy to think of a death knight as the opposite of a paladin, or a fallen paladin. A death knight's honor is everything, gain this as a personality trait. You may wish to go over with your DM and compile a Code of Conduct appropriate to your race, campaign setting and the like.(Starting Wealth is as paladin however: 5d4 x 10 gp)

To better suit a variety of builds, you may substitute your constitution modifier for charisma where applicable.

The original Gameboy was an 8-bit handheld console created by Nintendo.It was technically their second handheld console, the first being the Game & Watch series.The same team that developed the Game & Watch games also worked on development of the Gameboy, which went on sale on April 21, 1989 in Japan and July 31 in North America.It was originally sold for only $89.95, about $185.99 in 2020 dollars.It was Nintendo’s primary handheld console until the release of the Gameboy Color in 1998.

Before the Color, the Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Light were released but they weren’t hugely different than the DMG, more like minor revisions than a new handheld.Despite the color being release, the Gameboy DMG (Dot Matrix Game) continued to be sold until 2003, after the release of the Gameboy Advance.

The DMG had a total of 6 launch titles, though some were only released in specific regions:

By the end of it’s life, around 1,056 different games made for the system.The last game released in Japan was Shikakei Atama o Kore Kusuru: Kanji no Tatsujin on March 30, 2001.The last game released for both North America and Europe was Pokemon Yellow on October 19, 1999 and June 16, 2000 respectively.

Now let’s talk about this one specifically.

Case

Compared to the plastic on the inside, it’s a little yellowed but that’s to be expected with how old it is.I hope to eventually get my hands on some retro-bright and restore it back to it’s original grey.I am especially happy with this Gameboy because it still has both the battery cover and the communication port cover.

Front

The screen takes up the largest part of the front, consisting of the screen itself and a plastic cover on top.Along the top of the plastic cover is the text DOT MATRIX WITH STEREO SOUND.Just below the screen the Gameboy proclaims it’s name to the world, with the text Nintendo GAME BOY TM.Just to the left of the screen is a small red LED that shows when power is on.It is simply labelled as BATTERY.It’s useful for figuring out if you need to fix the contrast of the screen, get new batteries or have a deeper issue as in my case…

Below that is the buttons and speaker grill.On the left is the D-Pad molded from black, which has a more mushy feel than later Gameboy handhelds.It has a divot in the center and two slightly raised sections in each direction, which you can see if you look closely.There are also small arrows in each direction molded on the case.

On the right is the A and B buttons, with the labeling on the case instead of being molded into the buttons like in later Gameboys.These buttons are also molded from hard plastic, though in a dark red or maroon like color.

The start and select buttons are both molded from a silicon-like material, and are even mushier than the D-Pad.One thing to notice is that they are angled, not parallel with the bottom of the case.To me, it makes it feel more slick and futuristic.The labels for the buttons are printed on the case, in the same direction as the A and B buttons, thought at a smaller font size.

Finally, the speaker grill is in the bottom right, outputting mono sound.It has 6 “slots” for sound to come out of, but only 5 of them have holes cut through the case.

The back of the case is much simpler than the front, but you’ll definitely spend more time staring at the front than the back anyway so it doesn’t matter too much.Cartridges are loaded from the top, with the label facing out.When switched on, the cartridge is held in place by a small tab on the on/off switch.

Below that slot is the “battery bay”, which holds 4 AA batteries.A cover goes over the batteries, holding them in place.It is held by a little clip at the top and two legs at the bottom of the plastic.

To open up the case, there’s 4 screws on the outside and 2 inside the battery bay that need to be removed.

Edges

On the top of the case is the On/Off switch.To turn the console on, you move it toward the middle.When you turn it on, the button has a bit of plastic sticking out that holds the cartridge in the slot.This stops you from removing a cartridge while it is on.This “feature” was later removed from later Gameboys, I think when designing the original Gameboy they were worried that people would pull the cartridge out at the wrong time and corrupt the save data for whatever they were playing.

On the right side, there is the communication port and volume knob.The communication port is a 6-pin plug that allows one to connect to other Gameboys over a serial interface.It had a variety of different modes, including a “Normal” mode for 1 to 1 connections, a “Multi-Play” mode for 1 to 1-4 connections where each had the same game, and a “Multi-Boot” mode.I most often used it for trading Pokemon, and not much else.

The left side has the contrast knob and a jack to plug in external power.The knob allows you to adjust the contrast of the screen, which is extremely useful as it can take some tuning to get the screen to look right.It is about a third of the thickness of the volume knob.You have to fight against the ambient light around you, and as you play more and the battery drains it’ll start getting fainter.There are mods to install a fancy backlit screen, but that’s a mod for a different day.

The plug is intended to be used with the rechargeable battery pack, which would plug in via a cable.It was able to power the Gameboy on its own, and somewhat fixed the battery issue.

On the bottom of the case is the headphone jack.This allows headphones to be plugged in, letting you enjoy that sweet 8-bit stereo sound.I think it is ironic that the headphone jack was included on the original Gameboy, but not on the Gameboy Advance SP, which was made 14 years later.

The Insides

To open the case, you must remove 6 screws: 4 on back and 2 underneath the batteries.Once those are removed, the case opens up into two sections connected by a ribbon cable, pivoting at the top.The front section contains the I/O inputs, speaker and screen hardware. Modify certain attributes of atoms defined and stored within LAMMPS,in addition to what is specified by the atom_stylecommand. The id and map keywords must be specified before asimulation box is defined; other keywords can be specified any time.

The id keyword determines whether non-zero atom IDs can be assignedto each atom. If the value is yes, which is the default, IDs areassigned, whether you use the create atoms orread_data or read_restartcommands to initialize atoms. If the value is no the IDs for allatoms are assumed to be 0.

If atom IDs are used, they must all be positive integers. They shouldalso be unique, though LAMMPS does not check for this. Typically theyshould also be consecutively numbered (from 1 to Natoms), though thisis not required. Molecular atom styles are thosethat store bond topology information (styles bond, angle, molecular,full). These styles require atom IDs since the IDs are used to encodethe topology. Some other LAMMPS commands also require the use of atomIDs. E.g. some many-body pair styles use them to avoid doublecomputation of the I-J interaction between two atoms.

The only reason not to use atom IDs is if you are running an atomicsimulation so large that IDs cannot be uniquely assigned. For adefault LAMMPS build this limit is 2^31 or about 2 billion atoms.However, even in this case, you can use 64-bit atom IDs, allowing 2^63or about 9e18 atoms, if you build LAMMPS with the - DLAMMPS_BIGBIGswitch. This is described on the Build_settingsdoc page. If atom IDs are not used, they must be specified as 0 forall atoms, e.g. in a data or restart file.

The map keyword determines how atoms with specific IDs are foundwhen required. An example are the bond (angle, etc) methods whichneed to find the local index of an atom with a specific global IDwhich is a bond (angle, etc) partner. LAMMPS performs this operationefficiently by creating a “map”, which is either an array or hashtable, as described below.

When the map keyword is not specified in your input script, LAMMPSonly creates a map for atom_styles for molecularsystems which have permanent bonds (angles, etc). No map is createdfor atomic systems, since it is normally not needed. However someLAMMPS commands require a map, even for atomic systems, and willgenerate an error if one does not exist. The map keyword thusallows you to force the creation of a map. The yes value willcreate either an array or hash style map, as explained in the nextparagraph. The array and hash values create an atom-style orhash-style map respectively.

For an array-style map, each processor stores a lookup table oflength N, where N is the largest atom ID in the system. This is afast, simple method for many simulations, but requires too much memoryfor large simulations. For a hash-style map, a hash table iscreated on each processor, which finds an atom ID in constant time(independent of the global number of atom IDs). It can be slightlyslower than the array map, but its memory cost is proportional tothe number of atoms owned by a processor, i.e. N/P when N is the totalnumber of atoms in the system and P is the number of processors.

The first keyword allows a group to be specified whoseatoms will be maintained as the first atoms in each processor’s listof owned atoms. This in only useful when the specified group is asmall fraction of all the atoms, and there are other operations LAMMPSis performing that will be sped-up significantly by being able to loopover the smaller set of atoms. Otherwise the reordering required bythis option will be a net slow-down. The neigh_modify include and comm_modify groupcommands are two examples of commands that require this setting towork efficiently. Several fixes, most notably timeintegration fixes like fix nve, also take advantage ofthis setting if the group they operate on is the group specified bythis command. Note that specifying “all” as the group-ID effectivelyturns off the first option.

It is OK to use the first keyword with a group that has not yet beendefined, e.g. to use the atom_modify first command at the beginning ofyour input script. LAMMPS does not use the group until a simulationis run.

The sort keyword turns on a spatial sorting or reordering of atomswithin each processor’s sub-domain every Nfreq timesteps. IfNfreq is set to 0, then sorting is turned off. Sorting can improvecache performance and thus speed-up a LAMMPS simulation, as discussedin a paper by (Meloni). Its efficacy depends on the problemsize (atoms/processor), how quickly the system becomes disordered, andvarious other factors. As a general rule, sorting is typically moreeffective at speeding up simulations of liquids as opposed to solids.In tests we have done, the speed-up can range from zero to 3-4x.

Reordering is performed every Nfreq timesteps during a dynamics runor iterations during a minimization. More precisely, reorderingoccurs at the first reneighboring that occurs after the targettimestep. The reordering is performed locally by each processor,using bins of the specified binsize. If binsize is set to 0.0,then a binsize equal to half the neighbor cutoffdistance (force cutoff plus skin distance) is used, which is areasonable value. After the atoms have been binned, they arereordered so that atoms in the same bin are adjacent to each other inthe processor’s 1d list of atoms.

The goal of this procedure is for atoms to put atoms close to eachother in the processor’s one-dimensional list of atoms that are alsonear to each other spatially. This can improve cache performance whenpairwise interactions and neighbor lists are computed. Note that ifbins are too small, there will be few atoms/bin. Likewise if bins aretoo large, there will be many atoms/bin. In both cases, the goal ofcache locality will be undermined.

Hey. Welcome back. This is module 2 where we’re talking about Getting Started with QuickBooks.

I wanted to take a moment in this last section, section 5, and talk to you about converting your QuickBooks desktop data to the online version. Everyone won’t use this. It’s really just for the people that are moving to the online version of QuickBooks.

It really doesn’t matter which window you have open when you go to do this. If you go to the menu and click on File you’ll see an option that says Utilities. And in here is an option to copy the company file for QuickBooks Online. Now what’s going to happen here is it needs to close all the windows. Go ahead and click OK with that option and you’ll see everything is closed back there.

And then it says Where would you like to save the exported company file? Now I’m going to go ahead and hit Save and I’ve already got one in here so I’ll replace it. And now it’s exporting my data. And you can see once it’s done it tells you it’s successful and it’s got it on my desktop. So all I have to do now is when I create my online version of QuickBooks, once I get it all setup I can go File, Utilities and I’ll be able to import that file that’s on my desktop. So it’s super easy to do that.

While we’re in here I saw one more thing I just wanted to mention. When we were clicked on File and we were looking at Utilities did you notice the option to copy the company file for the Mac? If you happen to have a Mac and you’re going from the PC to the Mac you just can’t have a backup copy and restore it. You have to actually copy the company file for QuickBooks for Mac right here.

Save it to a flash drive and then put that flash drive in your Mac and then you’ll be able to actually restore it. So that’s how that’s going to work. Pretty easy.
That’s all there is to actually converting your QuickBooks desktop to the online version.

Hello and welcome to Port Your Mac App to Apple Silicon. My name is Kuba Mracek and I will be guiding you Mac app developers through the journey of transitioning your apps to Apple Silicon. We will start with an overview of what the transition means for you and your apps. Then we'll discuss building universal Mac apps and what problems you might hit there. I will show running, debugging, and testing on Apple Silicon, and we will talk about implications for plug-ins. Finally I will mention a few tips for working with universal apps. So let's jump in. The Mac is transitioning to Apple Silicon. You're probably wondering what exactly that means for you and your apps. Let's start with the basics. The native CPU architecture on Apple Silicon Macs is called arm64, which will sound familiar if you're developing for iOS. iOS devices use the same architecture.
Apps can of course be built as native ARM code and run natively, but existing Intel apps continue to work on Apple Silicon Mac computers. The Rosetta translation will seamlessly run them. arm64 is the primary topic for today, because that's the new CPU architecture that your apps will use, and not just your GUI code. All user space programs will now be using arm64 as their CPU architecture. In this session we will cover how to use Xcode 12 to compile all your code to arm64 to get it to run natively.
So I have an Apple Silicon Mac here, and I'm going to launch Xcode and open an existing project called Solar System. Let's focus on this area here in the toolbar that contains the active run destination. It says My Mac, but if I open it it reveals more options. I can choose to run under Rosetta or to build a universal app for both Apple Silicon and Intel. Let's stick with building natively and let's just build and run the app. And there it is. Without any code changes or project setting tweaks, the app builds and runs natively with just a press of the Run button in Xcode.
In Activity Monitor, I can verify the process type. So under Solar System Mac, in the Kind column, it shows as Apple CPU architecture. That means it does run natively. Xcode 12 handles the necessary project settings for you. You don't have to change build settings to select CPU architectures.
And as we've just seen, for apps that don't have portability issues, building a native version is often as simple as clicking the Run button in Xcode.
So I recommend you just go ahead and try that. If your app works and runs correctly, your job is done. In case you do run into issues, I will be describing some common pitfalls later in the session. We're also publishing an extensive porting documentation at developer.apple.com/documentation and you can start with the page called Apple Silicon, and from there you can navigate to other articles that cover many of the topics from this session in greater detail. The documentation is an excellent resource that will answer many of your porting questions. Let's discuss some basic concepts around Mac apps. Your apps, and basically all executable code, are stored in a file format called Mach-O. These files can either be targeting a single CPU architecture — let's say 64-bit Intel — or they can be universal, that means support multiple CPU architectures. To examine a file on disk, you can use the lipo command, and I will be showing you how to do that later.
Starting this year, Mac apps should be built and distributed as universal apps, built for both Apple Silicon and 64-bit Intel CPU architectures.
If you have any existing Intel only apps, or if for some reason you can't start building your app natively right away, Apple Silicon computers have Rosetta, a translation environment that can seamlessly run these. In Rosetta, the entire process is always translated. You cannot load native code into a translated process or vice versa. You also cannot use Rosetta for kernel extensions, AVX vector instructions, or virtualization. Xcode fully supports building and running apps for Rosetta. Let's look at how that works. As we've noticed before, the run destination in Xcode allows you to target Rosetta. Pressing Run will build the code for Intel and then run it in Rosetta. In Activity Monitor, the app now shows as Intel CPU. So it is running in translation. All aspects of development from Xcode, including testing, debugging, and profiling are supported, and it's all translated on the fly. So if you perhaps happen to use the debugger to look at individual CPU instructions, you'll notice that they are Intel instructions. Don't be surprised by that. They're all being transparently translated by Rosetta. Let's now focus on getting your apps ported over to run natively on Apple Silicon Mac computers. And the first step here is building your apps as universal. Let me start by explaining why I think building your apps for Apple Silicon is actually going to be a very easy task. First of all, the endianness of arm64 is the same as x86. So if you remember the PowerPC to Intel transition, you will not have to deal with any byte order swapping problems this time.
Second, if you have any shared code with iOS apps, that code is almost certainly already fully ported to arm64, because iOS uses the same CPU architecture as Apple Silicon Mac computers. And third, you can use any Mac that you already have to build apps as universal. Xcode 12, the SDK, and the entire toolchain fully support cross compilation. That is, it's able to produce
